My first day at the Reno Gazette-Journal was Monday. After days of driving, I finally made it to Reno and got off to a quick start. I covered Memorial Day at the Veterans Cemetery in Fernley, NV as well as the Reno Aces (our minor league baseball team and feeder team for the Arizona Diamondbacks) game against Oklahoma City. Here are my two favorites from the day.
Michel Minaberry places a flag on his mother’s memorial at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fallon, NV Monday. Minaberry’s mother, Nancy, relayed secret messages as a cryptographer during the Korean War, but her family remembers her for her laugh. “She had a laugh that nobody could miss,” Minaberry said. The Reno Aces run onto the field to congratulate teammate Josh Whitesell, far right, after he hit the walk-off single that scored the winning run in the Aces’ 5-4 victory over the Oklahoma City Redhawks on Monday at Aces Ballpark. It was the Aces’ fourth straight win. (© John Schreiber/ Reno Gazette-Journal)
